Quality health care is within reach of Ouachita residents on both sides of the river.

With St. Francis Medical Center, which recently added an after-hours pediatric clinic, and Glenwood Regional Medical Center, which has expanded its imagery technology to include a 64-slice MRI, to the many specialty services – Louisiana Pain Care, Monroe Surgical Hospital, Ouachita Community Hospital and P&S Surgical Hospital – locals don’t have to leave home to seek top-quality medical care.

“Ouachita Parish has a very strong physician and hospital community in both primary and secondary care,” says Billy Justice, director of marketing for Vantage Health Plan, North Louisiana’s Health Maintenance Organization. “Most illness can be managed with providers locally, and the medical community has excellent relationships with LSU Science Center in Shreveport, as well as other centers of excellence in surrounding states.”

Glenwood Regional Medical Center has a full complement of health-care services including an exclusive Heart and Vascular Institute recognized in the top 10 percent nationwide for heart surgery. Other key services include the Women and Children’s Pavilion and diabetes management.

In addition, Glenwood is committed to patient comfort, offering amenities such as room service, wireless Internet, in-room movies and free, convenient parking.

Excellence in service is also the hallmark of P&S Surgical since it began in 1986. Located across the street from St. Francis Medical Center and connected by a pedestrian bridge, P&S offers a 3:1 nurse-to-patient ratio and has partnered with St. Francis since 1997 for services.

“We have a phenomenal place,” says CEO Linda Holyfield, a registered nurse/administrator who has led the surgical hospital for the past 11 years. “We make sure our patients have a ‘wow!’ experience, not just clinically, but also as a friendly, warm and welcoming place.”

In addition to a full array of 13 surgical specialties ranging from neurosurgery to orthopedics, the hospital now offers a comprehensive weight-loss program, featuring gastric sleeve and lap-band procedures.

“We have an exercise and support program for these patients,” Holyfield says. “We don’t just turn people loose. We have a team of professionals, including nurse practitioners, a physiologist and a nutritionist, who work with them, and we also have support groups. If they aren’t ready to make certain lifestyle changes, then they don’t need to have the surgery.”
